The national cuisine of Venezuela is mainly based on fresh fish and shellfish. The best recipes also comprise of the vegetables, especially yams, yucca, plantains and beans. Other specialties include chicken and meat with bread. One of the most popular national dishes is Pabellon. It is cooked of stewed and shredded meat, which is accompanied by rice, black beans and banana. The Arepas is also eaten all over the country. This special bread of Venezuela is made of corn flour, water and salt. It can be topped with cheese, ham, jam, or chicken. Other specialties are Merengadas (milkshake with various fruit), Chicha (a sweet drink made of rice), Papelon con limon (beverage of sugar cane juice and lemon), Polar (the most popular of several local beers).
